English version follows the Japanese text.
English Version
Learning to care for myself is still a little difficult.
🤍The days when I looked happy from the outside, while slowly losing the ability to hear my own body.
I think I looked happy from the outside.
People even told me,
“You have such an ideal family.”
From the outside, I probably looked like someone who was living properly, with a family, with everyday life moving along as it should.
So I do not really remember anyone telling me, “Please take care of yourself.”
And to begin with,
I did not clearly realize that I was not being cared for,
or that I kept putting myself last.
I was simply getting through each day.
Watching his mood.
Taking care of the home.
Thinking about the children.
Trying not to create waves.
That had become so normal
that the feeling of caring for myself
had become something distant.
What does it mean to care for myself?
Buying expensive skincare.
Eating what I like.
Resting slowly.
Or something else entirely.
Even now, I cannot say that I fully understand it.
But at least back then,
the idea of caring for myself
felt far too distant.
My body was quietly closing inward without me realizing it
Inside that emotionally abusive relationship, my body slowly began to change.
I was constantly tired.
I no longer had the energy to look in the mirror.
I lost my appetite, and my weight kept dropping.
By the time I left, I had become so thin that my spine and pelvis were visibly protruding.
But at the time, I barely realized that my body had reached that state.
More accurately, I did not even have the capacity to care.
Even when my body was crying out,
there was no part of me left that could receive its message.
The days when I was exhausted but kept telling myself, “I’m still fine.”
The days when I ignored the signs my body was sending me.
Those things build up without us noticing.
Putting myself last had become normal
I could not pay attention to my body, not only because I had no physical energy.
I think it was also because, over a long period of time, prioritizing someone else had become normal.
His mood.
His schedule.
His feelings.
I would check those things first, and only then think about myself with whatever space was left.
That order of things had quietly become part of me.
The sense of caring for myself faded little by little in that way.
It does not disappear all at once.
The small daily habit of putting someone else before yourself accumulates,
until one day, you no longer know how to treat yourself.
Caring for myself was something much simpler
Even if someone had told me back then, “Take care of yourself,” I probably would not have understood what that meant.
I thought caring for myself had to be something special.
Having everything perfectly together.
Living with ease.
Achieving something.
I felt as if I had to do something big.
But now, I think about it a little differently.
Caring for myself may not be something special.
Maybe it begins with simply not treating myself carelessly.
Not blaming myself for being tired
by saying, “You shouldn’t be tired over something like this.”
Not dismissing my pain
by saying, “You’re too sensitive.”
Not looking at myself in the mirror
only to search for flaws.
Not feeling more guilt than necessary
for resting or eating.
It is not about doing something big.
It may begin with simply not treating the person I am right now as if she does not matter.
Maybe that is enough to start.
I do not need to blame my past self
I do not think I need to blame the version of myself who could not care for herself back then.
At that time, I did what I had to do.
Putting myself last
was the only way I knew how to get through those days.
It was not weakness.
It was the best I could do in that environment.
So I can begin now.
Not by blaming who I was yesterday,
but by treating myself a little more gently today.
That is enough.
I feel like I am slowly coming back to myself now.
But it did not happen all at once.
It happened through small things, repeated little by little.
I think that kind of time can be slowly reclaimed.
Treating myself a little more gently from today
If caring for yourself still feels difficult,
maybe it is enough to begin by not blaming yourself.
Do not blame yourself for being tired.
Do not blame yourself for what you could not do.
Do not blame yourself for the body that became too thin.
Do not blame yourself for not being able to notice.
I feel that even this alone can change something, little by little.
When the way we treat ourselves changes,
the feeling of being inside our own body can slowly begin to return.
There may be days when the desire to eat comes back.
There may be moments when the way we look at ourselves in the mirror softens, even just a little.
Those small changes begin to gather over time.
Next time, I want to write about how the mind and body are connected.
Caring for myself and the state of my body
are more deeply connected than I once realized.
