The Day I Decided to Divorce
🤍It wasn’t anger.
It was the quiet moment when something I had always known became real.
There were still dishes on the table from dinner.
My children were each spending time in their own way, and the house was filled with the ordinary sounds of everyday life.
And yet, only that day felt different.
“It’s time to end this.”
I said it quietly in my heart, so softly that no one else could hear.
Before I move on to writing about the mind and the body, I want to take a small detour.
There is something I need to write first.
The day I decided to divorce.
It was not a day when my anger exploded.
It was not a day when I shouted back.
It was not a day when I broke down crying.
If anything, it was very quiet.
But on that day, I think I was finally trying to place my life back into my own hands.
It Had Been Building, Little by Little
There was not one dramatic event.
But little by little, something had been building up inside my everyday life.
Things he carried from work would sometimes be brought into the home.
Sometimes they did not come out as words, but as silence.
There were also moments when money felt less like something that belonged to the family, and more like something that belonged only to him.
And more than anything, there was the way my words, my thoughts, and my feelings seemed to be denied in some way.
Each moment may have looked small on its own.
But when those moments continued day after day, I started to wonder if maybe my own sense of things was the problem.
Maybe it was my fault.
Maybe I was being too sensitive.
Maybe the way I said things was wrong.
Little by little, something inside me was being worn down.
By the time I noticed it, it had become normal for me to read his mood before I even allowed myself to feel anything.
As I wrote in my previous article, somewhere in my heart, I think I had known for a long time.
I cannot keep living like this.
But what I “knew” inside me could not easily become reality.
That Day, It Became Real
One day, I realized that the money I had saved for my children was gone.
It had been used without telling me.
When I asked about it, he said,
“There’s no way that money was there.”
In that moment, my anger did not explode.
I did not break down crying.
Something inside me simply went cold.
Or maybe, to be more precise, it was not that I became cold.
It felt as if something I had known for a long time had finally become real.
I think a part of me had already known that it was over.
But until then, maybe I had still been trying to believe that something could be fixed.
Maybe we could still go back.
Maybe we could still return to a normal family.
I was trying to believe that.
But what did “going back” even mean?
I was looking for a place to return to, but I could no longer see the shape of that home, or where the light was supposed to be.
By the time I realized it, even the outline of “normal” had become blurred inside me.
If only I endured a little more.
If only I did things a little better.
If only I didn’t disturb the peace.
In that way, I had kept pushing the small voice inside me to the very back.
But on that day, I could no longer ignore that voice.
Those words did not create the answer.
I think they simply made real the answer that had already been inside me.
What Came After the Decision
I am going to divorce.
The moment I decided that, everything felt very quiet.
But what came after was not quiet at all.
Could I raise my children on my own?
What would I do about work?
What would I do about money?
Where would we live?
Would I make life harder for my children?
The moment I made one decision, the weight of reality slowly began to sink into my body.
Deciding to divorce and carrying the life that comes after divorce were completely different things.
The decision itself was quiet.
But the days that followed were not quiet at all.
First, I Thought Only About Becoming Independent
In the middle of all that fear, there was one thing I decided first.
I would become a full-time employee.
Before moving forward with the divorce, I needed to create a situation where I could stand on my own feet.
If I could work full-time for one year, then I would divorce.
That was what I decided.
Before I could deal with my emotions, I decided what I needed to do.
At that time, I think that was all I could manage.
Sadness, frustration, fear.
I did not have the time or space to sit with those feelings slowly.
First, I had to work.
I had to create income.
I had to protect the life I shared with my children.
That was the only order in which I could move forward.
I was not able to move because I was strong.
I think I moved because I was scared, and I had no choice but to keep going.
When I Think About My Children
I never wanted my children to struggle.
That feeling was always there.
But by choosing divorce, I think I took many things away from them.
A home with both parents.
The ordinary days that were supposed to continue.
The time in which they could simply feel safe without having to think about anything.
I still do not take lightly the fact that my choice changed those things.
Of course, I still cannot say easily what the right answer was.
Divorce did not make everything better.
Becoming free did not suddenly make life easier.
Still, I could not continue leaving my children in that home environment.
And more than anything, I did not want them to keep watching their mother read someone else’s mood, swallow her own feelings, and make herself smaller.
At that time, I do not think I was only trying to protect myself.
I was trying to protect the home environment where my children and I would continue living.
And I wanted my children to one day become people who could choose their own lives for themselves.
Not by swallowing their feelings to fit someone else’s mood or the atmosphere around them.
But by asking themselves how they wanted to live.
What they wanted to choose.
I wanted to leave them a place where they could feel that they were allowed to choose freely.
I was not a perfect mother.
Still, at that time, in my own way, I was desperate.
I think I was trying to protect the life and home environment that my children and I needed in order to keep living.
Placing My Life Back Into My Own Hands
On the day I decided to divorce, I did not win against anything.
I did not suddenly become strong.
I simply felt that I could no longer keep living while leaving my own sense of self behind.
That decision was not about blaming someone.
I think it was about placing my life back into my own hands.
From there, my eleven years as a single mother began.
I thought that once I became free, everything would become easier.
But reality was not that simple.
When I decided to divorce, my annual income was ¥720,000.
To become free, feelings alone were not enough.
I had to rebuild my life first.
♢
Next time, I want to write about that reality.
Not only about how difficult it was.
But about how, even then, everyday life continued.
